Commissioning Is More Than “Does It Turn On”

Commissioning means confirming the installed unit performs correctly across a complete functional range — not just initial ignition, but sustained operation, control response, and safety system function, before you consider the installation complete.

Break-In Procedures

Some units, particularly certain factory-built wood and gas units with specific paint or coating on internal surfaces, require a manufacturer-specified break-in burn procedure (often involving several shorter, moderate-temperature burns before running at full output) — skipping this and running a unit at full output on first use can damage coatings or components in a way that’s difficult to trace back to the actual cause later.

Verifying Safety Systems Specifically

Beyond normal operation, commissioning should specifically test safety systems — the ODS on a vent-free unit (introduced from a sales perspective elsewhere in this academy), high-limit switches, and any flame-failure safety shutoff — confirming they actually function as designed, not just assuming they’re fine because normal operation looked correct.

Documenting Commissioning Results

Recording actual commissioning test results (manifold pressure reading, ignition cycle confirmed, safety system tests passed) rather than a generic “unit tested, working” note follows the same documentation-quality principle covered from a service perspective elsewhere in this academy.
