Selecting the Correct Venting Configuration
Building on Lesson 9’s spec-sheet reading: once you’ve confirmed which venting configuration a specific unit supports and requires (introduced from a sales perspective elsewhere in this academy: direct vent, B-vent, vent-free), the installer’s job is executing that specific configuration exactly, including all manufacturer-specified components.
Vertical vs. Horizontal Runs and Elbow Limits
Every configuration has maximum straight-run length and maximum elbow count limits, often with rules about combining them (each elbow reduces the maximum allowable straight-run distance, as introduced from an estimating perspective elsewhere in this academy) — calculating your actual planned run against these limits before cutting any pipe prevents assembling a run that exceeds what the unit is rated for.
Support and Slope Requirements
Horizontal venting runs typically require a minimum slope (commonly specified as a rise per foot of horizontal run) to promote proper condensate drainage and draft, plus support brackets at specified intervals to prevent sagging over time — both details easy to skip under time pressure but both affect long-term performance and safety.
Sealing Every Joint
Twist-lock and mechanical joints (Lesson 3) still require confirmation of full engagement at every single joint along the run, not just the ones convenient to double-check — a multi-section run has multiple opportunities for an incompletely seated joint, and each one needs individual verification.
