Fireplace masonry sits at the intersection of two demanding disciplines: structural masonry that has to survive decades of weather and settling, and fire-rated construction that has to survive direct flame contact and repeated thermal cycling without cracking, spalling, or creating a path for heat to reach combustible framing. A masonry mistake elsewhere in a house is a cosmetic problem. A masonry mistake in a fireplace or chimney is a fire-code violation waiting to be discovered — sometimes literally, by a home inspector’s thermal camera during a sale.

This course covers the material science (mortar types, brick grades, refractory vs. structural materials), the dimensional requirements that keep a fireplace code-compliant (hearth extensions, clearances to combustibles, footing depth), and the construction sequence for brick, stone, and stone veneer fireplace work. You will finish able to select the correct mortar type for a given application, lay out a fireplace to correct hearth and clearance dimensions, and recognize the difference between a cosmetic masonry defect and a structural or fire-safety one.
