Clearance Isn’t One Number — It’s a Set of Numbers

A single unit typically has multiple different clearance figures for different directions and materials: side clearance, rear clearance, clearance to the mantel/shelf above (introduced from a masonry perspective elsewhere in this academy, equally applicable to factory-built units), and floor/hearth clearance — confirming and physically verifying each one individually, not just the most commonly cited figure, is the actual installer’s job.

Clearance Reduction Systems

Some listed clearance-reduction systems (specific engineered spacers, ventilated air gaps) allow a reduced clearance from the manufacturer’s standard figure — but only when that specific reduction system is itself listed and installed per its own instructions. A generic assumption that “any air gap helps” without using a tested, listed reduction system is not a valid basis for reducing clearance below the standard figure.

Verifying Clearance in Three Dimensions

Clearance needs to be verified not just at the framing stage but reconfirmed once finish materials (which add thickness) are accounted for — a clearance that was correct at rough framing can become non-compliant once trim or surround material eats into that margin, if it wasn’t planned for from the start (echoing Lesson 6’s finish-material point).

Documenting Clearance Verification

Photographing measured clearances before they’re covered by finish material (the same principle covered in the masonry quality-control curriculum elsewhere in this academy) creates a record proving compliance, since the actual clearance won’t be visible or measurable once the job is finished.
