Placement Decisions That Are Actually Installer Decisions

While a sales consultant and customer settle on general placement and design (covered elsewhere in this academy), several placement details are genuinely technical decisions that fall to you as the installer, and get confirmed before construction begins in earnest.

Venting Path Constraints on Placement

A placement that looks ideal in a design conversation can be infeasible once the actual venting path is considered — structural obstructions, maximum vent length, and termination location restrictions (distance from windows, doors, property lines, or other openings) can all rule out an otherwise-preferred location.

Termination Location Requirements

Direct vent terminations have manufacturer- and code-specified minimum distances from windows, doors, soffit vents, and property lines — confirming the intended placement allows for a code-compliant termination location, not just a convenient interior placement, before committing to that spot.

Confirming Placement Before Committing Materials

A placement conflict discovered after framing, venting, or gas rough-in work has begun is dramatically more expensive to correct than one caught during the assessment and planning phase — this is why Lessons 6 and 7’s dry-fitting and confirmation habits matter as much for placement decisions as for dimensional ones.
