Insert installations (introduced from a sales perspective elsewhere in this academy) require precise measurement of the existing firebox opening — width, height, and depth at multiple points, since older masonry openings are rarely perfectly rectangular or consistent. Measuring only at one point and assuming consistency is a common source of an insert that doesn’t fit or seal correctly.

Measuring for New Framing (Built-In Units)

For a built-in zero-clearance unit, you’re measuring and confirming available framing space against the manufacturer’s required rough opening dimensions — not just “will it fit” but confirming the specified clearances around all sides are actually achievable in the available space, not just the unit’s own footprint.

Accounting for Finish Materials
