Measuring an existing masonry fireplace opening for an insert retrofit, you get a width reading near the top of the opening that’s noticeably different from the reading near the bottom.

What You Actually Do

You take multiple measurements at different heights and depths rather than relying on a single reading, and you order or select the insert based on the most constrained (smallest) relevant dimension, since older masonry openings are commonly irregular and a single measurement can be misleading.

Why This Matters

Ordering an insert based on a single, unrepresentative measurement risks a unit that doesn’t actually fit once you attempt the real installation, after the product has already been purchased and possibly after other prep work has begun.
