Masonry vs. Factory-Built Wood Installation

As an installation technician, you’re more commonly installing factory-built, listed wood-burning fireplaces and stoves — and the same listed-system discipline from Lesson 1 applies fully here.

Hearth and Clearance Requirements

Factory-built wood units have their own manufacturer-specified hearth extension and clearance figures (Lessons 11 and 12), which should never be assumed identical to the masonry fireplace clearance figures covered elsewhere in this academy — always confirm against this specific unit’s listing.

Venting Requirements for Wood Units

Wood-burning factory-built units use Class A chimney pipe (introduced from a masonry/chimney-systems perspective elsewhere in this academy), with the same twist-lock joint discipline (Lesson 3) and height/clearance rules (the “3-2-10” rule covered in the masonry curriculum) applying equally to a factory-built installation as to masonry construction.

Combustion Air for Wood Units

As covered in Lesson 14, higher-output wood units in tightly sealed homes are a real candidate for requiring dedicated outside combustion air — confirm this specifically for wood installations, since it’s a frequently overlooked requirement on this appliance type.
